Vogue Doll

I went to Goodwill, um, okay, I’m not even going to admit how long ago and thus how long this has been sitting on my to-do list… But anyway, someone had donated a very large doll collection, most of them 12-18″ soft bodied dolls with ceramic head, hands and feet. I got the feeling the donor had recently passed away, but perhaps they were moving into a nursing home, or just moving on, but then I think it would be so sad that they didn’t have someone to pass them on to. Maybe these were the leftovers, but they were everywhere – lined up in the toy section, scattered through the furniture section, propped up at the end of the glassware aisle… It was impressive. I told Rebecca that she could pick her favorite, and then I found two with music boxes in their abdomens, and then another I couldn’t leave behind, and that was my limit, but then I found a fifth, plastic this time, but with such style that I knew there was someone somewhere who would appreciate her far more than her Goodwill price tag was going to get her. So, yah, I left with four dolls for Rebecca and I, and one to give away, but how could I not? I’m not the sort of person to pay a new price tag for one of these, but they were sitting there for $5-$8 begging to be rescued. My rational was that two would be for Rebecca, and two for miss unborn – there, maybe you didn’t notice, but obviously I’ve been holding on to this for at least two months, since Penelope is that old now, but the truth is probably twice that. Ahem.

So, here is this incredibly stylish girl in pink, her dress tag says “Vogue Dolls, Inc. Made in U.S.A”, I have no idea if that just applies to the dress (and matching hat) or the doll too. Her eyes open and close, and she is jointed at the neck shoulders and hips and has no problems sitting up by herself. She has a corsage reading “Gary and Connie February 28, 1976″. A wedding presumably, I would love to know the story behind all these dolls. I would love to keep her, but I’m getting rid of things in a quest for tranquility and some freaking space around here, so I certainly can’t keep something I bought intending to give away.

I’m hoping to find someone who will love this doll, not flip it on Ebay, so if you want her please tell me why, and what you plan to do with her. It will be a random draw among all the people who sound convincing, and if you blog this or follow this blog feel free to enter two or three times and tell me. Having a blog or some kind of internet presence would go a long way to convincing me you are a real person, so do put your blog or flickr page, or whatever, into the comment url field. I’ve been a bit burned on an internet gift before, and I’m a bit hesitant about the whole thing now, but this girl deserves a loving home. The giveaway will be open for a week, I’ll close comments next Tuesday night (the 20th) or Wednesday morning, and it may take me a couple days to sift the comments. P.S. I’ll ship anywhere.

New Little People Figures

Ice Cream Shop is Closed

Once upon a time we bought Rebecca an old school Little People Main Street playset at a garage sale for $5, but it didn’t have any people. We’ve slowly been fixing that. The first little person was a two inch section of wooden dowel with some tape wrapped around it, and a face painted on. (See the figure on the left.) I made a few of them, and they ran the show for a long time. We’ve slowly been adding ‘nicer’ figures to them, although, I really don’t think Rebecca cares what they look like, it’s more for mom and dad who also have to play with them.

Jesse turned two new wooden Little-People compatible figures, oh, months ago! I finally got around to my half of the deal, painting them. Of course it had to be a joint project with Rebecca, so she got to re-paint two of the figures we’d done before. (Can you tell which are which?) I think they came out pretty well, I’m getting much better at painting tiny faces, you should have seen the first couple. Luckily Rebecca has re-painted them, destroying the evidence. Whee!

For the Dolls

back

First a dress. I don’t know why I never thought of this before, but it is so much easier to get a doll into a dress whose straps snap than get their arms through fiddly little sleeves, and also this gives the gapping back with huge velcro pieces a miss too.

snail

I avoided the tiny tiny turned seams by just making the whole bodice fully lined, sewing it right sides together and turning it right side out. Okay, so turning those long skinny straps was a bit of a pain, but less of a pain than my usual route of tiny plastic doll dresses. (I think this is Barbie’s little sister, but I’m happily clueless and we got her at a flea market.) So now I can make as many dresses as my daughter wants, with very little hair pulling. Woot! And I bet I can even add sleeve caps to the strap shape.

Diaper

Next, diapers, necessary for any well turned out baby doll. This is the first one I’ve made, but it came out pretty well, and now I have requests to outfit the rest of her baby dolls. This one is reversible, partly to reduce diapering frustration, and partly because I couldn’t decide which should be the inside.

Whenever I take off Sali Doll’s diaper Rebecca comes after me, exclaiming ‘What are you doing? Sali Doll is pooping all over everything!’ I had to take this picture fast.

Matryoshka Prototypes

Matryoshka Dolls

Here are my first two attempts at matryoshka dolls, I want to make one for a friend for her baby shower. The first one is much too tall, and didn’t have a face at all, since I was just experimenting, by my daughter kept asking me to give her a face, so I drew one. The second one I was more sure of the shape, so I did embroider her face before I stitched her shut. I think she might still be too tall though.

For the next one I’m going to add a pocket for a nesting baby, but I need to decide if it is going to be gathered, or sewn flat on, and how big and such, and if I’m going to make the doll smaller… but I hope to get the next one right, because my daughter already has too many stuffed dolls, she doesn’t need any more reject projects to care for!

These are so quick I may have a new addiction though, certainly a new baby shower gift, they are much quicker than quilts!

Mice

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Mice in SwingI’ve been working on my armchair tutorial, but that’s still going to be a while, so here are some mice:

I made them using the pattern from Molly Chicken’s Mousey and His Bed. I didn’t follow the instructions much, but I used the pattern. I also didn’t make the bed, although I think it’s pretty cute, and since my daughter wants her own mouse now, although I think she may have forgotten about it, I’d make the bed for her.

These two mice have a much more fab house though, which I didn’t make. It was a felt tree house for faeries on sale from the Pottery Barn Kids, a birthday present for a new three year old. I’m almost sorry I didn’t get the other one they had for my daughter, because it’s a hollow tree house with a leaf swing, how awesome? But she has too many toys. Also I hate buying things that look like I made them, but I didn’t, because then people are always asking and I have to say, ‘no, I bought that at the store. You thought I was cool there for a minute, didn’t you? But no. HAhahaha.’

Anyway. You should go and make some of these mice, because they are fast and cute, even when you hand sew them with a blanket stitch. I think next time I might try making slits for the ears and putting them in with the bases folded in half perpendicular to how they are inserted now. Maybe.

Green Butterfly Walnut Baby

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

I haven’t been feeling very creative recently. I’ve been tired, and spiraling deeper into an all-I-want-to-do-is-sit-on-the-couch mood. Trying to convince my daughter she wanted to play Animal Crossing with me. Not particularly healthy. But I needed to get this done, and that was good. Because making things makes me want to make more things, and I could use a little upward spiral right now.

This baby is for a woman who said on the Dec. 3rd give-away post that she lost her baby this fall. She gives each of her children ornaments every year, and wanted this one for the baby. There really wasn’t any option other than making her one. I hope it does her a little bit of good. Half sympathy, and half pagan gesture to the gods, please don’t take my baby away. The constant litany of motherhood.
